  • Biographical or Historical Note Experimental school in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Centro Educativo de Nuevo Mundo in Guayaquil, Ecuador, was founded in 1979 as an experiment in Catholic social justice. It is a school in which funds from a morning program and families with adequate financial resources are used to subsidize a school for the very poor in the afternoon. The morning school is a Catholic bilingual grade and high school (K-12). Its 700 morning students come from the middle and upper classes. The afternoon school brings in 400 students from the poorest sections of Guayaquil. For them, Fundacion de Nuevo Mundo provides the same high-quality grade school (K-6), as well as a technical high school curriculum which enables students to expand their practical knowledge. The founders of Nuevo Mundo were Pat McTeague and Sonya Rendon. They met in Quito, Ecuador, where McTeague, then a BVM, was teaching. Subsequently Ecuadorian Rendon came to the United Sates and Mundelein College in Chicago, Illinois, to study. The blueprint for this experimental project was presented by Sonya Rendon as partial fulfillment for her master's degree in Religious Studies. Nuevo Mundo, opened in 1979, celebrated its first commencement in 1991 when 81 young men and women graduated.
