  • AbstractCorrespondence, photographs, and printed matter documenting the history of the 1888 Tomlinson Subdivision of Chicago, Illinois, and additional documentation researching the possibility of involvement of Frank Lloyd Wright in the design of some of the buildings.
  • OriginationNorris, Ed.
  • LocationThe collection is housed in the Art Institute of Chicago Archives’ on-site stacks.

The Tomlinson Subdivision was begun in 1888 in the present-day Lincoln Park area of Chicago. The majority of the materials in this collection are images of buildings from the area, collected by Ed Norris. Norris compiled this information while investigating the possible contributions of Frank Lloyd Wright in the design of a number of the structures. Extensive research conducted by Norris is put forth in the report contained in this collection under the series "Miscellaneous Papers."

Papers regarding the Tomlinson Family and eponymously named subdivision in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. The subdivision, on the 2300 blocks of North Clifton and North Racine Streets, dates from 1888 and contains several arts and crafts style homes. This collection documents the history of this subdivision and the structures that have been built and razed on it, including the Alexian Brothers Hospital, demolished in 1977. This collection also contains research related to an unsubstantiated claim that Frank Lloyd Wright was involved in the design of several buildings in the subdivision.

Series I, Photographs/Illustrations, consists of a great number of images of the exterior, interior, and select elements of buildings from the Tomlinson Subdivision. Series II, Correspondence, is comprised of letters referring to the subdivision's history. Some also are related to Norris's research. Series III, Printed Papers and Series IV, Miscellaneous Papers and Notes, house papers relating to the history of the subdivision and also a number of articles regarding Frank Lloyd Wright's work and style of design.

SERIES I: PHOTOGRAPHS AND ILLUSTRATIONS. Arranged first alphabetically by correspondent, then chronologically.

SERIES II: CORRESPONDENCE. Arranged first alphabetically by correspondent, then chronologically.

SERIES III: PRINTED PAPERS. Arranged chronologically.
