He began practicing architecture in 1906, establishing the partnership Otis & Clark. During World War I he served as a U.S. Naval Reserve Lieutenant. In 1920 he established the firm Clark and Walcott where he worked for five years. Some of his prominent works include the Chicago Zoological Park, the Lincoln Park Administration Building, the Primate House and Aquarium, the Winnetka Village Hall, and the Hinsdale Memorial Building. He was the architect for many private residences in the Chicago area and throughout the United States, including Mrs. James Ward Thorne's home in Santa Barbara, California.

Series I, Photographs, contains photographs of Clark's projects, arranged alphabetically by city location, then by project name; a few family photographs are located at the rear. Series II, Scrapbooks, contains a scrapbook album documenting Clark's architectural career, and a second scrapbook documenting his military career. Series III, Diaries, includes twelve five-year diaries for the years 1901 to 1960. Series IV, Project Papers, includes drawings and other documentation.
