Vi Daley has been an active member of Chicago’s Lincoln Park community for many years through her work in neighborhood organizations and politics. Daley was the Executive Director at Friends of Lincoln Park before she served as Chief of Staff for 43rd Ward Alderman Charles Bernardini from 1993 to 1998. She was elected Alderman of Chicago’s 43rd Ward in 1999, reelected in 2003 and 2007 and did not seek re-election in 2011. Alderman Daley served on many city council committees: the Budget and Government Operation, Capital and Technology Development, Economic, Energy, Environmental Protection and Public Utilities, Finance, Historical Landmark Preservation (Vice-Chair), Parks and Recreation, Rules and Ethics, Special Events, and Cultural Affairs and Zoning (Vice-Chair). She promoted the preservation of unique buildings throughout the 43rd Ward. She introduced legislation to create height limits for mid-sized residential buildings and for business and commercial buildings in order to ensure continuity on residential and main streets.During her tenure as Vice-Chair of the Historical Landmark Preservation Committee and Zoning, 16 historic landmarks were designated in the 43rd Ward. Daley’s goal of creating more pedestrian friendly streets in Lincoln Park resulted in improved lighting and landscaping. She was the guiding force in the redevelopment of Cummings Playground located across from the entrance to the Lincoln Park Zoo. Since its redevelopment, Cummings Playground has become one of the most used playgrounds in the Chicago area. She created the Lakefront Sculpture Exhibit to bring large-scale contemporary sculptures to the area. In 2011, Alderman Daley was a recipient of Outstanding Community Leader Award honoring her 18 years of service to the 43rd Ward.
