The Chicago Civil Service League was formally organized on January 21, 1901 to attempt to secure observance of civil service laws in Chicago. According to Leonard White, it flourished during the first twenty years of this century, but gradually declined in membership and importance.

The records in this collection begin with the founding of the League in 1901, and end in 1913. Minutes, reports, and correspondence are arranged in approximately chronological order. Also included are clippings, League publications and other documents.
