Mary Reynolds Aldis (1872-1949) was a poet and playwright. In 1910, she founded the Aldis Playhouse, which operated for several summers on the grounds of the Lake Forest home she shared with her husband, real estate executive Arthur T. Aldis. She also served as President of the Visiting Nurses Association of Chicago

Folders one and two were given directly to the Modern Poetry Library in connection with a collection of books from Mary Aldis' private library. These manuscripts were collected by Mary Aldis in preparation for her talk entitled "War Poetry, Old and New" first delivered in Chicago on January 13, 1919. The Edgar Lee Masters letter and photograph and associated clippings comprising folder four were found in 1974 in a book from the Aldis library.
