The Community Service Workshop was funded under Title I of the Higher Education Act of 1965, and held at the university of Chicago from October 1966 to June, 1967. The one hundred participants chosen for the workshop were drawn from public and private agencies, and included volunteers and local community leaders. Special care was taken to insure heterogeneity of the groups in order to provide an "enriching educational experience."

The Workshop was held in three phases and included lectures, large and small group discussions, field trips, and supervised field research. The Workshop was sponsored by the Center for Urban Studies, the School of Social Service Administration, and University Extension.

The Community Service Workshop Records contain the notes, transcripts, programs, correspondence, etc., of the Community Service Workshop. The first three boxes of the papers are arranged in chronological order under their respective subject titles. The last two boxes are arranged by the categories used in Sol Tax's, The People vs. The System, the publication of the Workshop's proceedings.
