  • Collection summary Image of three firemen holding a fire hose, standing in the charred ruins of the temporary water-intake crib structure after the fire in the South Shore community area of Chicago, Illinois. A temporary wooden structure involved in the construction of a new water-intake crib by George W. Jackson, Inc., in Lake Michigan off 71st Street burst into flame on January 20, 1909, and 70 workers died in the disaster.
