  • Collection summary Informal full-length portrait of five men posing with a dead buffalo in a forest preserve in Palos Township, Illinois. In 1924, the Forest Preserve District of Cook County brought buffalo into its Palos District at a location later called Buffalo Woods, near the northwest corner of 87th Street and Kean Avenue. After buffalo escaped from their compound several times, the president of the Forest Preserve board authorized citizens to shoot strays. Charles Coey is holding a rifle. He owned Dynell Springs resort (which was later the site of the Saber Room in Hickory Hills). Eventually the buffalo were moved to Lincoln Park Zoo.
