  • Collection summary Portrait of children with handicaps grouped with actors dressed as animal characters (a bear, an elephant, and a cat) and comic characters, which performed in a show called Hip Hip Hooray. They are gathered backstage at the Auditorium Theater. The performance, by the Hippodrome Company, took place February 16, 1917 for children from institutions for sick and dependent boys and girls. The children were guests of an anonymous philanthropist who acted through the Chicago Daily News newspaper. The girl with the bow in her hair on the left of the image is sprawled over the lap of an animal character, and is looking backwards. There is only one man standing in the back row, with a mustache.
