  • Description Theresa Nelson of Chicago was Presbyterian-St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing's first African American graduate, in the class of 1968. She is pictured with Edith Payne, Chairman of the Division of Nursing, an unidentified chaplain, and Dr. Mark Lepper, who was Executive Vice President of the hospital at that time. Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital was the product of the April 1956 merger of St. Luke’s Hospital, founded in 1864, and Presbyterian Hospital, founded in 1883.
