    • Holmes was born in Dedham, MA in 1828 and received his medical degree from Harvard in 1854. After post-graduate studies in Europe, Homes arrived in Chicago in 1856. He founded the Chicago Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary (later became the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary), served as president of Rush Medical College (1890-1898), and helped found the Presbyterian Hospital.
