  • Collection summary Correspondence, minutes, reports, clippings, newsletters, financial records, and research data of the Chicago Area Project, a community oriented program established in the 1930s for delinquency prevention and research, administered by Clifford R. Shaw and Henry D. McKay; plus related files of the Institute for Juvenile Research; and files of the Illinois Youth Commission, particularly files of Anthony M. Sorrentino. Topics include treatment and prevention of juvenile delinquency through inner city neighborhood programs, primarily on the Near North Side, South Side, and West Side of Chicago (Ill.) and including ethnic groups predominant in those neighborhoods. Other topics include the sociology of urban youth in the United States and the effectiveness of programs for rehabilitation of criminals. Contains papers of sociologists Clifford R. Shaw and Henry D. McKay; materials from community organizations, including the Mexican Civic Committee, the Russell Square Community Committee, and the West Side Community Committee; and Dennis Haffron's study of the Chicago Area Project.
