  • Collection summary Incoming letters, speeches, articles, financial papers, certificates, letterpress copy books of outgoing correspondence, and a large number of printed items, chiefly relative to Charles S. Dewey's career as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in Charge of Fiscal Affairs, 1924-1927; as financial adviser to the Polish government and director of the Bank of Poland, November 1927-January 1931; as a Chicago banker, 1931-1940; as Illinois Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives, January 3, 1941-January 3, 1945; and as a businessman, philanthropist, and government economic advisor, 1945-1949. Collection includes Mr. and Mrs. Dewey's social correspondence while residing in Washington, D.C. from ca. 1941 to the end of their lives. Other topics include Dewey's residence in Poland (ca. 1927-1931), with trips to the Soviet Union and to Germany, where he heard and commented on a 1928 speech by Hitler.
