  • Collection summary Miscellaneous mortgage and lease documents, deeds, certificates, permits, receipts, and insurance policies of the Holmes family, including Mrs. Ellen Holmes, and Isaac Holmes and his wife Rosina (Bond) Holmes. Collection includes a eulogy given to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows upon the death of Isaac Holmes, who came to Chicago at the age of 12 in 1834. The collection includes a lease for land where the Chicago Daily News Building later stood along Madison Street on the west side of the Chicago River. (1843-1883).
  • Location of Other Archival Materials Note Related materials at Chicago History Museum, Research Center, include a portrait photograph of Isaac and Rosina Holmes. He wasn't related closely to Isaac Holmes of Ohio, whose sons, George W. Holmes and Samuel S. Holmes, later resided in Chicago.
  • Acquisition information Gift of Mrs. Robert Holmes in 1955. A watch that belonged to Isaac Holmes in 1858 also was donated by his family to the Chicago History Museum.
