  • Collection summary Collection of lantern slides and typographic samples from the collection of Eugene Dana, artist and faculty member at the Chicago's Institute of Design (ID) and University of Illinois at Chicago. Primarily consists of lantern slides used by ID for study and teaching (1938-1963), and slides created as part of design projects (1948-1949). Also includes slides of classical sculpture used in the film production, Boxing Tonight (1949), edited and produced by Dana and Charles Lichtenstein. Two small groups of slides represent, respectively, the photography of Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan. Typographic samples include announcements and invitations designed by Frank Barr, who taught typography and supervised the printing workshop at ID (ca. 1950-1955). Miscellaneous announcements and catalogs relating the ID are generally student designs.

  • Biographical or Historical Note Artist Eugene Frank Dana died at Harvard, Ill., in 1996 at the age of 84 and is interred at Marengo, Ill. He taught at the Institute of Design, ca. 1947-1963, and at the University of Illinois at Chicago, ca. 1966-1985.
