  • Collection summary
    • Photographs from the estate of Elizabeth Cheney, Oak Park (Ill.) resident, antique collector, daughter of Florence and William Wallace Cheney, and last in the line of descendants of Chicago pioneer Philo Carpenter. Includes portraits of Elizabeth Cheney, primarily as a child and young adult. Also includes formal and informal portraits from several family branches, particularly Carpenter, Cheney, Clary, Dole, Forbes, Hooker and Solomon families; and interiors and exteriors of homes (ca. 1900) and farms, many in the Chicago area and midwestern United States. Vacation snapshots, generally in albums, show Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, and the western United States, notably Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks.
    • Albums also contain snapshots of the World's Columbian Exposition (Chicago, Ill. : 1893). Loose photographs, some commercial, depict the Century of Progress world's fair (Chicago, Ill. : 1933-1934). Postcards include some images of the 1893 and 1933 world's fairs and views of the United States, including a series of Georgian style doorways in Massachusetts. Scrapbooks (ca. 1882-1912) contain clipped images of theatrical personalities, a courtship tale illustrated with clippings, and greeting cards.
