  • Collection summary
    • Correspondence, teaching materials, printed materials, newspaper clippings, photographs, financial records, and other papers of the Hilsabeck family. A majority of the papers document Emily Hilsabeck, a children's book reviewer and teacher at the Chicago Home for Girls. Emily Hilsabeck was an active member of several Chicago literary societies, such as the Friends of American Writers, Friends of Literature, and the Order of Bookfellows. Materials related to her literary activities include mostly correspondence and invitations to events (box 1). Also present are issues of several literary publications, including the Hobby Horse Review, the Bookwomen newsletters, and the Friends of Literature publication Book Ink, of which Hilsabeck was editor (box 3). In addition are Hilsabeck's writings, consisting mostly of short stories and poetry (boxes 2 and 3), correspondence and bulletins from the Children's Reading Round Table, and newspaper clippings related to literary topics (box 3). Materials relating to the Chicago Home for Girls (box 4) include correspondence from students and co-workers, student work, detailed reports on student achievement and behavior, exams, annual reports and newspaper clippings about Hilsabeck's students. Also included are Hilsabeck's teaching materials.
    • The collection also contains materials of Hugh Hilsabeck, Emily Hilsabeck's brother-in-law, who worked for the Municipality of St. John and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, as an assistant director of education (box 5). A majority of his papers are correspondence relating to his teaching, but also include teaching certificates and books on school law in the Virgin Islands.
