  • Collection summary Photographs relating to the Walter and Mary Zielinski family, Polish immigrants who operated Walter's Tavern and restaurant at 47th Street and Ashland Avenue, just south of "Whiskey Row" in the Back of the Yards community area of Chicago (Ill.).   • Biographical or Historical Note Mary Zielinski came to the U.S. as a young child; Walter worked as a sausage maker in Europe, and emigrated after developing arthritis from making sausage and being unable to do that work. In the late 1920s or early 1930s, they opened the tavern, which did not discriminate against Polish or African American customers, one of the few taverns in the neighborhood that served African Americans as well as whites at the time.
