  • Collection summary Photographs of programs and events at Erie Neighborhood House in the West Town community of Chicago, Illinois, or sponsored by it. Includes images of the Erie Neighborhood House summer camp showing children playing games, building fires, preparing meals, and swimming. Also included are images of children playing basketball, making crafts, and reading at unidentified Erie House locations. Additional photographs depict the Erie Neighborhood House Camp for Cystic Fibrosis, people wrapping Christmas gifts, various unidentified awards ceremonies, food drives, exterior shots of the building, and composite photos used for marketing purposes. Erie Neighborhood House operates two sites: 1347 W. Erie Street and 1701 W. Superior Street.

  • Biographical or Historical Note Founded in 1870 as Holland Presbyterian Church; in 1882 became Noble Street Mission of the Third Presbyterian Church; in 1886 Erie Chapel was built at 1347 West Erie Street; in 1915, Erie Chapel Institute incorporated; in 1936 became Erie Neighborhood House with a new building at the same address. Florence H. Towne was head resident for many years. In 1986 the Erie Family Health Center opened at a second site: 1701 West Superior Street, and the day child care center opened there in 1995.
