  • Collection summary Views of the WAC recruiting office opened in Mandel Brothers department store in Chicago, 1944. Display windows at intersection of State Street and Madison Street were removed to accommodate the nose of a Douglas C-54 transport plane which was used to help boost recruitment. Lt. Col. Leon Mandel and others are seen at the inaugural ceremony and posing in the C-54 cockpit; a group of women are sworn into the WACs; and general views of people visiting the recruiting station are included.
