  • Collection summary Handwritten, typed, and published versions of songs, other musical compositions, poems, essays, short stories, and plays; correspondence; scrapbooks; lists of works by Clara Edmunds-Hemingway; biographical sketches; diaries; and miscellaneous items relating to her career as a singer (contralto), composer, and author. Her best-known poem, "Taps," won first prize in a 1937 Chicago Tribune contest and was performed frequently during World War II. She was a regular contributor of verses to a column in the Chicago Tribune called "A Line O' Type or Two." Topics in the collection include performances of her works on radio and before women's clubs and other organizations. Her manuscripts of her compositions generally include a note on the date of composition in the upper right corner, and if the item was published, a note in the upper left corner specifies the name of the publication. She resided in Oak Park (Ill.) for many years and had a home in Benton Harbor (Mich.).
