  • Collection summary The collection documents Open Space's varied initiatives to increase the amount of and improve the access to green space for all Chicagoans. The records include publication drafts, notes, and final products; correspondence; maps and plans; meeting minutes and agendas; photographs, slides, and negatives; presentation materials; articles and press clippings; background and historical information on sites; ordinances; property tax, appraisal, and ownership information; environmental and ecological information; evidence of political support for projects; and reports, frameworks, and development plans.
  • Biographical or Historical Note The Open Space Section is part of the City of Chicago's Department of Planning and Development's Sustainable Development Division. (The Department of Planning and Development's predecessors include the Department of Zoning and Planning and the Department of Housing and Economic Development, which appear extensively in this collection.) Growing out of the 1998 CitySpace plan, the Open Space Section works to increase the amount of publicly accessible open space in Chicago, in an effort to provide recreational green space to all residents. Some of its projects have included the Campus Park Program, the Calumet Open Space Reserve and projects to develop public pathways and trails along the Chicago River.

  • Acquisition information The collection was transferred from the City of Chicago Department of Housing and Economic Development in 2010.
