  • Collection summary Papers, dated from 1906-2002 and undated, with the bulk of the materials dated from 1941-1993, including biographical records, correspondence, photographs, clippings, promotional materials, administrative records, master tapes, and personal research from the lifetime and broadcasting career of pioneer African-American radio DJ, Richard E. Stamz. He moved to Chicago in the 1920s, worked in minstrel shows and advertising, then became a local legend at WGES from the 1950s to the early 1960s with his on-air persona, the Crown Prince of Soul. Stamz hosted a TV variety show on WBKB in 1956, and worked at WVON and other Chicago stations throughout his long life. He was heavily involved in local politics and worked as an advocate for the Englewood community.
