  • Collection summary The Bownson Circle records consist of 3.0 linear feet spanning the years 1917 to 1975, and include histories, meeting mintues, annual reports, yearbooks, photographs, and poetry books.
  • Biographical or Historical Note The Brownson Circle was organized in 1917 as a literary club by women in Rogers Park and received its certificate of incorporation on December 31, 1917. The club was named for Orestes A. Brownson, philosopher, essayist, and reviewer, and its mission was t interpret and promote good literature and to engage in works of charity. The main philanthropy of the Bownson Circle was an annual scholarship to Loyola University. Other activities included sponsoring creative writing classes in poetry and short story and participating in civic drives, especially for the March of Dimes and Tuberculosis, and conducting war work during World War I and World War II. The Bwonson Circle was a subscriber to the Park Ridge School for Girls, Trail Rangers, Veterans Bureau, Cancer Research, Blind Babies Fund, and the Mission of Our Lady of Mercy. The Brownson Circle was dissolved on May 26,1975.
