  • Biographical or Historical Note The exhibition Dan Flavin: Pink and Gold took place December 9, 1967 through January 14, 1968. It was curated by Jan van der Marck, the MCA’s first Director. At the time Flavin objected to describing his work with the terms exhibition and sculpture and preferred to think of the show as an “activity” or an “indoor routine.” Flavin created an installation based on a serial progression of pink and gold fluorescent lights over six gallery walls. An IBM computer was installed in the Museum and was used to print the catalog on demand. Patrons would feed a computer punch card into the machine, and the machine would general the catalogue on computer paper. The content of the catalogues could be occasionally slightly inconsistent depending how accurately the computer read the punch card on each printing.
