  • Biographical or Historical Note The Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection was established in 1989 to honor the late Joan Flasch, a bookbinder and artist who worked in a number of positions at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The collection facilitates the in-depth study of artists' publishing practices from the early 1960s to the present. Renowned for its breadth and easy accessibility, it includes examples of commercially produced as well as handmade books, periodicals, ‘zines and comics, multiples, video and audio recordings, digital works, posters and ephemera -- created by artists of local, national, and international significance. The artists’ book collection is complemented by an extensive selection of reference books and exhibition catalogues on related themes. The Flasch Collection is a hands-on, teaching collection housed in the Special Collections of the John M. Flaxman Library at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
