Lincoln Park Community Conservation Council records

Formed in 1962, The Lincoln Park Conservation Community Council (LPCCC) was the official link between the citizens of Lincoln Park and municipal renewal agencies for the four decades that followed. Under the Urban Community Conservation Act of 1953 and the Federal Housing Act of 1954, Chicago established a five-person Community Conservation Board and local Conservation Community Councils. The local conservation councils were appointed by the mayor and made up of citizens from the areas slated for urban renewal. In July 1956, Chicago's Community Conservation Board approved the Lincoln Park Conservation Association's request to designate Lincoln Park a "conservation area." Such a designation was a necessary forerunner to obtaining federal urban renewal funds. One of the council's first official acts of business was to approve the Lincoln Park General Neighborhood Renewal Plan.

The LPCCC records consist of meeting minutes, reports, correspondence, memos and other organizational papers. Documents related to land use and planning are also included.

This collection is separated into four series: 1. Administration; 2. Subject Files; 3. Community Conservation Board Files; 4. Urban Renewal Files. Organizational documents such as by-laws, records of meeting minutes, and nominating committee materials are located in the Administration series. Subject Files are arranged alphabetically and contain information about schools, hospitals, and organized citizens groups such as the Poor People’s Coalition. The Community Conservation Board Files, arranged chronologically, pre-date the LPCCC’s establishment in 1962 but contain information about the Board’s function in the urban renewal process, urban renewal legislation, and the Lincoln Park General Neighborhood Renewal Plan. Reports on the status and amendments to Projects I and II of the GNRP are in the Urban Renewal Files series along with Housing and Zoning Committee files, and specific parcel projects.
