The papers and maps in this collection date from the late 19th to the 20th century and together present a view of Chicago as it has changed over time. Although maps make up the bulk of this collection, the additional papers add to the depth of this view.

This collection brings together a variety of documentation about Chicago and vicinity. Series I, Maps, consists of maps from the late 19th to the 20th century, and generally focuses on Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. This series is divided into general maps and real estate maps. Many of the general maps show the same neighborhood areas over different points in time, while the real estate maps advertise subdivision developments and available residential land. Most maps are dated and many additionally name engineers and designers. Series II, Printed Matter, is comprised of ephemera such as tour books, souvenir postcards and promotional literature from various sources. Series III, Subject Files, consists of a variety of materials such as photographs, correspondence and printed materials that relate to particular aspects of Chicago and its inhabitants.

SERIES I: MAPS. Arranged first into two subseries: General and Real Estate. Alphabetical arrangement within each subseries.

SERIES II: PRINTED MATTER. Arranged first into three subseries: Promotional Papers, Souvenir Papersand Guidebooks, and Miscellaneous. Alphabetical arrangement within each subseries.

SERIES III: SUBJECT FILES. Arranged alphabetically by subject title.

This collection includes gifts from Tom Lyman, the Erdmann Schmocker Estate and an anonymous donor, in honor of Professor Ludwig Hilberseimer and Erdmann Schmocker; and Dorothy Unger in 1997, John Walter in 2005, the E.M. Franklin Family in 2006, Ward Miller in 2008; the Irving Park Historical Society in 2012; Bishop Hill Heritage Association, 2015; Preservation Chicago in 2015; Cynthia Winter and Nicholas Weingarten in 2015; Ronald W. Ehrhardt in 2016; Wilson and Linsk families in memory of Melvin James Wilson on 2018. Many of the other items in this collection were purchased by the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries. The origin of some items is unknown.

This collection was originally processed by Jennifer Kirmer in June 2009 and was updated by Nathaniel Parks, Heather Tennison in 2013, Sara Ramasastry in 2015, Fallon Pfeiffer in 2017 and Nathaniel Parks in 2018.
