Carl Hansen (1926-2010) was the lone Republican on the Cook County Board, where he served as the 15th District commissioner from 1974 to 2006. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944, rising to the rank of major in the Reserves. He served in Germany from 1946 until 1952. Upon returning home, he earned an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1954. Hansen entered into suburban politics, becoming the Republican Committeeman of Elk Grove Township in 1962. Throughout his career, he chaired a number of Republican organizations, including the Suburban Republican Organization of Cook County and 12th Congressional District Republican Organization. In 1967, Hansen founded a consulting firm, Chicago Associates, Inc., specializing in marketing, management, and real estate services. He was a member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners in 1970, and then from 1974 to 2006—making him the second-longest serving Cook County Commissioner, after the late John Stroger.
