  • AbstractThe Gary Urban League (GUL) records consist of correspondence, 1940-1960; published material, 1953-1955; clippings, 1948-1962; press releases, 1952-1962; course outlines and class schedules of special institutes held in Gary, 1957-1960; agenda, minutes, memoranda, greeting cards, handwritten notes, lists, and announcements of the GUL 1945-1965; charts and questionnaires of the National Urban League (NUL) on employment trends; petitions and minutes of Midtown Citizens Committee, 1954-1962; constitutions and bylaws; terms of affiliation for NUL affiliates; agreements; studies and surveys; congressional testimony of Edwin C. Berry, Executive Director of the Chicago Urban League; Gary's city ordinances; bibliographies pertaining to the race question; job order forms and descriptions, 1953-1964; GUL manuals on community organization; conference proceedings; application forms for a GUL placement pilot project; biographical sketches and photographs of GUL and NUL personnel and of officers of Gary's Fair Employment Practice Commission; annual statistical, narrative, financial, monthly, and quarterly reports of the GUL 1950-1964; and annual reports of NUL affiliates, 1941-1963. These records pertain to the activities of the NUL, its annual conferences, studies, and projects, and its industrial and vocational training policies; vocational guidance and back-to-school campaigns of the GUL, and its career conferences; fair employment practice commissions; Gary's community organization plans and Block Clubs; efforts of GUL to end discriminatory employment; cooperation between the Urban League and other Gary civic groups; housing conditions in Gary's black areas and new housing projects such as Tri-City Village Housing Project; and the integration of Gary's Marquette Park Beach in 1953.

The Gary Urban League, an affiliate of the National Urban League, is a civil rights organization that promotes African American economic and social welfare and seeks to improve race relations in Gary, Indiana. The Gary affiliate was founded in 1945 in response to growing racial tensions in that city. The Gary Urban League maintains a research staff that has studied such issues as housing, health, education and employment opportunities in Gary's African American communities. The Community Service division oversaw the Gary Federation of Block Units - local clubs aimed at improving the appearance of African American neighborhoods. Throughout its history, the Gary Urban League has sought to use mediation to end workplace, housing and educational discrimination.
