Polly McCann is a native of Winnetka, Illinois. She graduated from New Trier High School and attended Lake Forest College. McCann was a volunteer in the zoo nursery at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago for 17 years, beginning in 1961. She was editor and principal writer for the Lincoln Park Zoo Societies member publication, ARK magazine from 1973 to 1980. During her years as a volunteer, McCann photographed the activities, people and animals of the zoo, creating a pictorial chronicle of Lincoln Park Zoo during its years of growth during the 1960s and 1970s.

The materials in this collection document daily activities such as feeding, cleaning cages, and veterinary care at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The collection also includes a group of photographs of Chicago scenes. The formats are photographic negatives, proof sheets and slides, and they were arranged chronologically by McCann.
