While all of the educational institutions in this collection were private ones, each school operated under slightly different principles. The Dearborn Seminary, located on Wabash Avenue, was established in 1856 and was dedicated to giving young women a broad education rooted in the doctrines of Christianity. The Chicago Female College, located in Morgan Park, held similar religious philosophies and, like the Dearborn Seminary, was both a boarding school and a day school for young women of the Chicago area. The Chicago Training School, also a women's school, had a much more specialized curriculum; it was designed to prepare young women for missionary work both within the United States and abroad. Also while The Dearborn Seminary and the Chicago Female College educated young women at the primary and intermediate levels, students at the Chicago Training School were required to be at least twenty years of age. The Chicago Academy appears to have been less religiously influenced than the other schools, and stands out as the only one that provided a co-educational learning environment. The Special Park Commission was committed to providing adequate recreational and learning environments for children. Unlike the schools, however, this commission operated primarily through public funding under the City of Chicago.
