Bertha E. Jaques served as Treasurer and Secretary of the Chicago Society of Etchers for twenty-seven years, an organization that she helped to found after moving to Chicago in 1883. Internationally known for her etchings of plant life, Jaques wrote several books including poetry, and was active in the Arts Club, Cordon Club, Wild Flower Preservation Society, and Audubon Society. She passed away in Chicago in March 1941 at the age of seventy-seven and was survived by her husband, Dr. William K. Jaques.

The Bertha E. Jaques Papers include an etching of a statue of Abraham Lincoln, brochure, photograph, poetry, correspondence, obituary, and two editions of her self-published work, Whims.

William H. Irwin donated some of these materials to the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1974 and 1980. Subsequent items were received from an unknown source in 1987 and added to these papers.
