  • Collection summary View of flowers marking a large cross shape on the floor of the Chicago Stadium at 1800 West Madison Street in the Near West Side community area of Chicago, Illinois, during Mayor Anton J. Cermak's funeral. This image shows the full view of the cross, including mourners in the seating area. Mayor Cermak was riding in a parade with President Franklin D. Roosevelt at Belmont Park in Miami, Florida on February 15, 1933 when he was shot by bullets believed to have been meant for the President. Mayor Cermak died on March 6, 1933. The assassin was Guiseppe Zangara, who was convicted of murder and executed on March 21, 1933. Rumors still exist that the bullets were intended for Cermak, ordered by Al Capone in retaliation for Cermak's involvement in the plot to kill Frank Nitti. Mayor Cermak was buried on May 13, 1933 in the Bohemian National Cemetery at 5255 North Pulaski Avenue on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. Mayor Cermak was born on May 9, 1873 in Kladno, Austria-Hungary (now the Czech Republic). He was the first "Slav" mayor and the 35th mayor of Chicago. He challenged the incumbant Republican mayor "Big Jim" Thompson and won the mayorial race on April 7, 1931 and served until his death in 1933.
