Livestock at the stockyards were quarantined in an effort to prevent hoof and mouth disease, which affects mainly cloven-footed mammals and is a highly contagious viral disease, characterized by blisters on the animals' mouth and feet. The stockyards employees were ordered to take precautions by the United States Department of Agriculture.
