A man holding a tripod camera is visible on the left side of the image. The explosion occurred on February 2, 1917 at 12:50 a.m. at 813-823 West 14th Place and South Newberry Avenue in the Near West Side community area of Chicago, Illinois. The cause was believed to be a leak in the gas main and approximately twenty-five people died.
