  • Access and usage restrictions To consult the glass negatives in this collection in the Research Center it is necessary to make an advance appointment (email: research@chicagohistory.org). However, the collection include prints of most or all of them.
  • Collection summary Primarily images of small businesses in Chicago neighborhoods taken by an unknown photographer, ca. 1895. Many of the photographs show the people who owned or were employed in these businesses. Included are views of grocery stores, barrooms, commercial laundries, barbershops, restaurants, pharmacies, blacksmiths, street railroads, and a few unidentified residences. A group of photographs depict activities in the disecting lab of an unidentified veterinary school. The majority of the negatives have been identified and printed. Image #22 contains a rare view of the Adolph and Wm. Loeb store front and flats, designed by Louis Sullivan in 1891 and located at the corner of Elizabeth (1235 West) and Randolph Streets. This view shows the Randolph Street side. The building is partially blocked by a delivery wagon of O'Donnell and Duer's brewery.
