  • Collection summary Black-and-white mounted and unmounted photographic prints, cabinet cards, glass negatives, tintypes, and printed materials created by or related to the Francis D. Nemecek family and Nemecek Studios photography firm at 1439 W. 18th Street in Chicago (Ill.). Images depict portraits of identified and unidentified family members; idenfied and unidentified clients, including Plzensky Sokol and the Bohemian Old Settler's Association of Chicago; and the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Also included are family member diplomas and Nemecek Studios envelopes.

  • Biographical or Historical Note Francis D. Nemecek was an immigrant and a prominent member of the Bohemian/Cazech community who operated a photography studio in the Pilsen neighborhood from about 1900 until his death in 1950. The first was located at 589 West 18th Street and the second at 1439 W. 18th Street (currently the Jumping Bean Café). The second studio also served as the family residence.
