Diary (ca. 258 p.) written by Frankenstein, the daughter of Jewish physician Victor S. Frankenstein of 4501 Ellis Avenue in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago, Ill., discusses primarily her romances and social life, including dances, theatre productions, lectures, and motion pictures that she attended and describes Chicago stores, hotels, and restaurants. Included are frequent descriptions of her clothing and family's house furnishings, esp. a thorough account of the contents of her bedroom pp. 28-29) and of automobile excursions, especially to Lincoln Park and the northern suburbs. Additional topics discussed in the diary are her graduation from Kenwood-Loring School, 1918 June 7 (pp. 50-64); visits and letters from young men serving in the armed forces during World War I; war home front activities in Chicago (especially p. 137-148) and Chicago's reaction to the Armistice (p. 254-257); the Chicago Race Riot in July 1919 (p. 201-204); disputes with her boyfriend over the relative merits of Christian Science and Judaism; trips to Miller, Ind. (Indiana Dunes); to Baltimore, Md.; and to Washington, D.C.; during 1918 and 1919 (p. 181-189).
