  • Collection summary Correspondence (primarily 1908-1950), financial records (primarily 1875-1919), news clippings and other papers relative to the operation of Mandel Brothers department store and to personal and family interests of Leon Mandel. Includes materials about the advertising for the department store in the Chicago Herald & Examiner, the Chicago Tribune, and the Shopping News; the employment of veterans returning from World War II; air conditioning of the store in the mid-1930s; Paris, Inc., a concessions company at the Century of Progress International Exposition; and the 100th anniversary of the department store in 1955. Other topics include Mandel's efforts (1946-1947) to persuade the International Olympic Committee to hold the 1952 Olympic Games in Chicago, and his interest in polo and horses.
