  • Biographical or Historical Note Born December 31, 1937, Chicago, Illinois. University president and administrator, botanist. Alice Bourke Hayes was born on December 31, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, and educated in local parochial schools. She received her B.S. in Biology from Mundelein College in 1959, her M.S. in Botany from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1960, and her PhD in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University in 1972. From 1962 to 1969, Hayes taught at Loyola University Chicago in the Natural Sciences Department (Instructor, 1962; Assistant Professor, 1967; Chair, 1967-1969). She then spent two years at Northwestern University in the Department of Biological Sciences as a National Science Foundation Fellow and as a visiting lecturer (1969-1971). Dr. Hayes returned to Loyola University Chicago in 1971 to resume her position as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences (Associate Professor, 1974; Professor, 1979; Chair, 1971-1977). From 1977 to 1980 she served as Head of Natural Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences. Then, from 1980-1987, Dr. Hayes served as the Associate Academic Vice President and from 1987 to 1989 as the Vice President of Academic Affairs. In July 1989, Dr. Hayes left Loyola University Chicago to become the Executive Vice President and Provost at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. In July 1995 she left St. Louis University to become President of the University of San Diego in San Diego, CA. Alice B. Hayes received many honors, grants, and awards during her expansive career.
